⛏️ James “Philosopher” Smith
James Smith's prospecting transformed the country around Waratah when he located rich tin ore at Mount Bischoff in December 1871. Following a creek towards its source led him to the deposit, with a sample later smelted at Table Cape. Mining brought a new industrial settlement into being and made the discovery significant well beyond the district. Smith later served briefly in Tasmania's Legislative Council. Although widely known as Philosopher Smith, the origin of the nickname remains uncertain. His local legacy rests on the documented discovery and the mining development that followed it.
🎭 Frederick Matthias Alexander
Frederick Matthias Alexander was born at Table Cape in 1869 and attended the local school before working and pursuing performance. Difficulties with his voice led him to observe his own habits of posture and movement, eventually developing the educational method known as the Alexander Technique. He later taught in mainland Australia and Britain, where his work gained an international following. The north-west Tasmanian connection is his birthplace and early education. His unusual career began with a performer's practical problem and developed into a method of studying how people use their bodies.
🏛️ Dr Mary Duniam
Mary Duniam joined Waratah–Wynyard council in 2005, became deputy mayor in 2014 and the municipality's first woman mayor in 2022. Her community work included Somerset Rotary, regional advisory bodies and the Tulip Festival. Teaching and research ran alongside council duties: her doctoral work examined partnerships between local government and social enterprises in rural communities. She also mentored women considering public office. Recognition included the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women in 2023 and life membership of the state's local government association in 2025, acknowledging a contribution spread across education, voluntary work and civic leadership.
